Neil Young’s archival album ‘Summer Songs’

The folk-rock legend is digging deep into his past

Neil Young just dropped a previously lost album, titled Summer Songs. The eight-track archival album was originally recorded in 1987 and features Young on all the instruments. Some tracks from the album have made their way into Young’s discography over the years, like American Dream, Wrecking Ball and Someday. But some sound elements and lyrics are different from the original demo tracks that are featured in the new album.

Summer Songs is the first chapter of Neil Young Archives Volume III.  The archival series is a long-term project started by the singer himself to release unreleased studio and live recordings from his career. The second volume of the project was issued last year and explored unreleased music recorded between 1972 and ’76. “Happy Holidays everyone! I think you will enjoy this very cool recording – lost for years, but not forgotten. Now a gift. NYA’s files reveal the whole history,” Young wrote in a blog post recently.
