Colourists are super confused about Kim’s bleached hair

Can Kim and her hairstylist work miracles?

Everyone — well, everyone with a basic knowledge of hair colouring and toning — is asking the same question about Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala hair. How did she get a bleach this flawless in just a day? Kim and her boyfriend, comedian Pete Davidson debuted as a couple at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner, where Kim was sporting her long dark hair. 

And Kim attended the Met Gala two days later, on May 2, where she flaunted her bright, bleached peroxide blonde hair and channelled a Marilyn Monroe aesthetic. “I did want a physical change, too, so I thought I would wait and do it for this, so I’m spending a day straight dyeing my hair — 14 hours straight! — to get it done,” Kim revealed. But colourists all around the world can’t stop talking about how much work it must have taken Kim’s hairstylist Chris Appleton to transform her super dark hair into a shade this bright. It all comes down to lifting, as colourist Zach Mesquit points out. “If you don’t evenly lift the hair with the bleach, you can not use a toner to even it out when you go to platinum,” Mesquit points out, and also adds that Kim’s hair had subtle darker patches which were noticeable.
