Kaffergaon and Lolegaon

Kaffergaon, an offbeat gem in Kalimpong, is surrounded by dense forests, rare flora, and snow-capped peaks. Expect clear Kanchenjunga views and quiet, golden sunsets.

Lolegaon, a serene Lepcha village near Lava, is known for its mossy forests, panoramic mountain views and the enthralling Canopy Walk. Nature trails, birdwatching and sunrise at Jhandi Dara make it ideal for a peaceful retreat.

“If you opt for shared cars from New Jalpaiguri and stay in homestays with meals, a trip can cost Rs 5,000-Rs 8,000 per person,” said travel influencer Meghna Ghosh.

She added, “Changey Falls, around 10km from Lava, is also worth a visit.”

Latpanchar

Latpanchar, perched at 4,200-5,000 ft in Darjeeling district, is a quiet hamlet inside the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a hotspot for birdwatchers and home to the rare Rufous-necked Hornbill.

Surrounded by cinchona plantations, it offers scenic trails and easy access to Ahaldara Viewpoint, Raja Rani Hill and Namthing Lake.

“You can also visit the Rabindranath Tagore Museum and explore Takdah, which are located nearby,” said trip adviser Debolina Majumder.

“A low-budget trip can be done for about Rs 8,000 per person,” she added.

Sittong and Tinchuley

Sittong and Tinchuley are scenic villages in Darjeeling district, perfect for a short offbeat trip.

Sittong, known as the Orange Valley, is known for its orchards, monasteries, and viewpoints. Key spots include Sittong Monastery, Jogighat Bridge, Lepcha Falls and Ahaldara Viewpoint.

Tinchuley offers sweeping Kanchenjunga views, tea gardens and a misty hill-country vibe. Key spots include Tinchuley View Point, Peshok Tea Garden, Lamahatta Park, and nearby Takdah.

“North Bengal is very safe. All the villages and even small towns are very safe for women. Gorkhas are known for their hospitality and also their matriarchal society. So you will never face any safety issues in North Bengal. Try to stay in homestays that have good reviews,” Meghna advised.

“Budgets typically range from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000, depending on your stay and itinerary.”

Bijanbari

Bijanbari, a quiet riverside town along the Little Rangeet River, lies about 1.5 hours from Darjeeling. It is known for eco-friendly tourism, hiking and birdwatching.

“A trip can be done for Rs 8,000-Rs 10,000, though you can always go higher,” said Debolina.

She recommends visiting Chamong Tea Estate, exploring local monasteries and stopping by Sukna forests en route.

“Make sure to hike to the nearby forests. You can take a local with you if they are willing to,” Meghna added.

Samalbong

Samalbong, about 30km from Kalimpong, is a quiet hamlet with picturesque mountain views. A low-budget trip here can cost around Rs 8,000 per person.

“Samalbong has this view point that not everyone knows of, from where Kalimpong can be seen and the landscape looks like a glowing necklace after sunset. Hence the name, ‘Necklace View Point’. If you love solitude and nature, you can spend your time there during and after sunset,” said Meghna.
