Ganashakti, the daily Bengali newspaper that is the CPM’s mouthpiece, was started on this day.
Before it became a morning daily, it first appeared every fortnight and then as an eveninger.
Saroj Mukherjee gave it a definite shape as its editor, and it reached its highest circulation when Anil Biswas was its editor.
Ganashakti, despite its ideology and its positions on different matters dictated by party politics, was once read by more than CPM party supporters.
The paper pasted on boards at street corners or near tea stalls was a popular sight. Once, many a Calcutta adda would be provoked by what had appeared in Ganashakti.
