Singer Sandhya Mukherjee was cremated with full state honours at the Keoratala crematorium on Wednesday evening. A police band played the bugle, after which a contingent of Kolkata Armed Police gave the customary gun salute. The body of the singer, who died on Tuesday, was kept at Rabindra Sadan before being taken to the crematorium.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, accompanied by a battery of ministers, led the last journey of Mukherjee. Hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects to the artiste at Rabindra Sadan and along the roads her convoy took to the crematorium.
Officials of Bally Municipality on Wednesday decided to collect samples of drinking water from parts of Liluah in Howrah where several persons have complained of diarrhoea since Tuesday.
A few people have been admitted to hospitals in the area.
A section of residents has complained about the quality of drinking water that is supplied through pipelines.
