The higher education department has asked government-aided colleges and unitary universities to reopen the online portal for undergraduate admissions, “if required”, because seats are vacant.
The department had earlier pushed back the last date for submission of applications for admission to undergraduate courses from August 20 to 27 because many applicants were still awaiting the higher secondary review results and not willing to apply till they got the updated marks.
An official of the education department said the “decision to allow aided colleges and unitary universities to reopen the admission portal was taken as it has been observed that a good number of seats are vacant at various colleges and universities”.
A notice issued by Manish Jain, the principal secretary of the department, on Wednesday says: “Online portal may be reopened… if required, for receiving fresh applications where the seats are lying vacant. UG admission process may continue till October 8.” An official of the department said several colleges appealed for the reopening of the portal.
“Seats in science subjects started falling vacant after counselling for BTech courses by the state JEE board began. The counselling continued till September 15. A good number of seats have fallen vacant,” he said. Another official said they had left it to the institutes to decide on reopening the portal.
If a college or university thinks it has no vacant seat, it may not reopen the portal.
