A man in his 30s allegedly entered a flat in his neighbourhood in Salt Lake and raped a 25-year-old woman.

The accused, Kaushik Ghosh, a resident of a housing complex in Sector I, was arrested on Monday following a complaint lodged by the woman’s brother.

The woman lives in the flat with her brother, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.

Ghosh allegedly entered the flat on Saturday night after the brother had stepped out for work.

“Ghosh knew the woman's brother had not locked the door. He would leave the door unlocked because the woman had a number of times failed to open it,” the officer said.

When the brother returned home, he found her in a dishevelled state.

“He spoke to his sister and realised that she had been raped. He then escorted the woman to Bidhannagar East police station and lodged a complaint,” the officer said.

Based on descriptions provided by the woman, the police arrested Ghosh.

A preliminary medical test revealed the woman had been raped, the officer said.

The police said Ghosh is unemployed and lives with his wife and daughter.
