A nurse at a government hospital has been duped of Rs 10 lakh by a man who first met her through social media and allegedly introduced himself as a neurosurgeon of another government hospital in the city.
The man, who police said was unemployed, was arrested on Tuesday. The woman, in her 20s, has reported to the police that she first met the accused — identified as Souvik Kumar Jana, 30 — through Facebook. “According to the complaint, Jana had introduced himself as a neurosurgeon working at a government hospital in Kolkata. They became friends over social media and then started seeing each other,” said an officer at Lalbazar.
After a few months, Jana allegedly convinced the woman to give her a loan of Rs 10 lakh in instalments. “She paid him in cash between June and October,” the officer said.
When the woman insisted on marriage, the man allegedly became incommunicado, the police said. The woman realised she had been duped and lodged a complaint.
