A summer road trip means long drives, open roads and spontaneous detours. However, preparation is key to enjoying the journey. From vehicle checks to comfort and safety tools, packing the right essentials can save you quite a lot of hassle, making your journey truly happy.

Before anything else, make sure your car is ready to hit the road. Check fuel levels, tyres, spares, brakes, engine oil and coolant. A quick pre-trip inspection can help you avoid the risk of breakdowns and ensure you are not stranded in the middle of nowhere during peak summer.

Keep all important documents handy. Carry your driving licence, registration certificate, insurance and pollution certificates. These are mandatory and can save you from trouble during naka checks. Even if you know the route, keep a navigation app handy for real-time traffic updates. It is also wise to download offline maps in case network connectivity is lost on highways or in remote locations.

In-vehicle comfort

Long drives can be very exhausting in the heat. Pack a travel pillow, do not forget a sunshade and a light comforter to stay comfortable in the AC. Handheld battery-operated fans can be a relief if the air conditioning needs a break during pit stops.

Little things often prove to be the most handy. Keep a flashlight for emergencies and an in-car charger to ensure your devices stay charged. Carry enough trash bags to keep the vehicle clean, and do not dump trash on the road. Also pack sanitiser, paper hand soap and wet wipes for hygiene. Do not forget sunscreen to protect your skin.

Food and beverages

Staying hydrated is extremely important when travelling in summer. Carry enough water or hydration drinks with electrolytes. Keep dry snacks and munchies. This helps avoid frequent stops.

Medicines

Keep your regular medicines within reach and also a few over-the-counter essentials for headaches, motion sickness or allergies. A well-stocked first-aid box is a must for treating minor injuries.
