Aquaman and Dune star Jason Momoa is in final negotiations to star in a Minecraft movie from Warner Bros, according to Substack publication The Ankler and and Variety. Of course, the movie is a long way from release, but a Minecraft movie has been in the works for long.
The movie was first announced in 2014 and a few months later Free Guy director Shawn Levy was reportedly set to direct. But the following year, Rob McElhenney, known for his work on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, was confirmed as director. The year after, the film was given a 2019 release but in 2018, McElhenney later left the project.
At the moment, we can at least hope that a Minecraft film is still on the cards. The game made its debut in 2011 and allows players to use blocks to create structures and worlds. The game became a sensation, reaching 100 million users just a few years after launch and helping spark Microsoft to acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014.
The Minecraft franchise continues to be very popular, having just surpassed one trillion views on YouTube in December while video game movies are doing well, with Uncharted movie and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 proving to be conversation starters.
