As Kolkata winds down for the night, the College Street crossing comes alive. Trucks arrive bearing crates of mangoes and traders negotiate prices at wholesale rates. My Kolkata hit the street to take a stroll through the city’s night mango market
Images by Soumyajit DeyEvery night, the familiar morning vegetable bazaar at College Street changes character. Around 11pm, trucks of mangoes unload on the road, turning the area into a busy wholesale fruit market
The trade continues till about 3.30am. The buyers are mostly retailers and small vendors from across the city
Most of the mangoes of this wholesale market arrive from North 24 Paraganas, Basirhat. Nadia’s Santipur varieties are also commonly seen
Buyers can find local favourites such as Himsagar, Amrapali, Langra, Gulabkhas, Chausa, Ranibhog and Dasheri
A standard crate weighing around 20 to 22 kilograms is typically sold between Rs 800 and Rs 1,000. The prices vary according to variety, quality and supply
The buyers are mostly local fruit sellers who purchase in bulk before transporting the mangoes to markets across Kolkata
