Calcutta: Trainer Vijay Singh’s Shine (Suraj Narredu) lit up the afternoon at the Royal Calcutta Turf Club with a dazzling victory in the 1,200m Echoes Of Light Handicap.
The improving daughter of Dreamfield tracked the front-running Merlet throughout. Turning for home, Shine quickened in style. She stormed clear to win with ridiculous ease. The impressive filly now appears well on course for a hat-trick if placed judiciously.
Trainer Rutherford Alford and jockey Vinod Shinde combined fruitfully to land the Averoff Cup with the 5/1 chance Bandukwali, who scored an encore. Shinde had the mare in a box seat behind Lucky Nine until turning for home. Once asked for an effort, Bandukwali surged ahead and sealed the issue comfortably. Verrazano and Oh My Darling finished late to take the minor placings. Favourite Star Power was never in the hunt. The victory completed a well-priced double for the trainer–jockey combination.
The pair had earlier struck in the 1,100m Adiella Handicap with the 10/1 shot Phenomenal Lady. The five-year-old produced a determined late burst to overhaul Cashaban (Vishal Bunde) in the closing stages. The heavily backed Money Catcher fizzled out in the final furlong after leading for most of the journey.
In the day’s opener, the 1,600m Royal Mantle Handicap, Vikash Jaiswal-trained Simran’s Attitude (Varun) fought gamely. She pegged back Lochs And Glens (Nikhil Naidu), the Doosra, from the Neil Darashah yard, while favourite Carnation (Suraj Narredu) appeared one-paced and failed to quicken when it mattered.
In the Obligado Handicap, apprentice N. Darshan continued his impressive run. He guided the unlucky Contessina to victory. The Rajesh Narredu ward had finished second in her previous three starts.
The curtain came down with Imran Chisty steering Shyam Habbu-trained Duesenberg to a fluent win in the Obolensky Handicap over 2,000 metres. Magnifico rallied late to finish an impressive runner-up.
