Calcutta: Expectations were high from Botero (Trevor Patel-up) in the 2,800m Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Cup and the horse fully justified his half-money odds to win the historical event from Cliffhanger (Vinay Jaiswal) here on Saturday.
However, Cliffhanger, a long shot, collapsed and died following a cardiac arrest on his way back to the unsaddling arena. Another runner in the race, Mandeville (Dashrath S) met the same fate, over the grueling trip, at about 1000m from the winning post.
Trainer Aashay Doctor and jockey Akshay Kumar, combined for the day, were also in the limelight, having scored quadruple of wins apiece.
