Campuses across the country host yoga sessions for students and faculty

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) celebrated International Yoga Day on June 21 with the theme ‘Yoga for Humanity’. The main programme was organised by the Office of the Games & Sports at the NMAK Pataudi Sports Complex of the university.

JMI vice-chancellor and chief guest Najma Akhtar inaugurated the programme that began with an invigorating yoga session by NCC cadets, NSS volunteers and staff members of the university.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) vice-chancellor Sudhir K Jain led students, faculty members and staff at a yoga session held at Malaviya Bhavan.

The BHU vice-chancellor also planted 11 saplings on the occasion. A prize distribution function was organised for the winners of various competitions held on the occasion of International Yoga Day.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar organised a variety of activities to emphasise the importance of yoga for the complete well-being of the mind and the body. The celebrations began with the demonstration and practice of yoga asanas. Amit Prashant, officiating director, IIT Gandhinagar, attended the session and encouraged the community members to adopt yoga in everyday life. The participants were told about the specific benefits of each asana.

The physical education Section of IIT Gandhinagar hosted two interactive sessions on ‘Relevance of Yoga in Everyday Life’ by Nitin Padhiyar, assistant professor, Chemical Engineering, IIT Gandhinagar; and Hemant Shah, independent yoga instructor. Both the speakers exhorted the participants to make yoga a part of one’s daily routine.

IIT Gandhinagar felicitated PAN IIT Yoga Competition qualifier students and their instructor. This was followed by an informative video on yoga protocol and techniques. A quiz on yoga added a touch of fun to the event. The event ended with a healthy yogic lunch for the participants.
