New BIMTECH–Swiss Re India MoU Focuses on Insurance Education and Research
In a significant step towards strengthening industry-academia collaboration, Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Swiss Re India to enhance education and research in the insurance sector. The partnership aims to develop future-ready talent through specialised training, mentorship, and industry-driven learning.
The collaboration is centred around BIMTECH’s Post Graduate Diploma in Insurance Business Management (PGDM-IBM), with a focus on co-developing specialised courses in reinsurance and related domains. As part of the agreement, Swiss Re will serve as a strategic partner, offering students access to internships, final placements, and short-term industry projects, thereby bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world application.
The initiative will also include a range of engagement activities such as training sessions, webinars, live projects, and workshops conducted by Swiss Re professionals. These interactions are expected to provide students with insights into current market trends and evolving challenges in the reinsurance sector.
A key highlight of the MoU is the joint development of specialised modules across emerging and critical areas such as Reinsurance, Risk Analytics and Data Science, Insurance Penetration and Protection Gap, Sustainability and Climate Risk, Leadership Development, and Technology-driven innovations in InsurTech. The programme aims to equip students with both technical expertise and strategic understanding, preparing them for the dynamic global insurance landscape.
Speaking at the signing, Amit Kalra reflected on the long-standing association between the two institutions and encouraged students to embrace continuous learning and adaptability. He highlighted the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in addressing India’s insurance protection gap, while also noting the need to shift public perception of insurance from a tax-saving tool to a critical risk management instrument.
Prabina Rajib emphasised that the partnership would create a structured interface between academia and industry, enabling enhanced learning outcomes through mentorship, internships, and practical exposure. She noted that India’s insurance sector presents both challenges and opportunities, making such collaborations essential for developing skilled professionals.
Beyond academics, the MoU also focuses on promoting research, awareness, and outreach initiatives in the insurance domain. The inclusion of executive mentoring programmes and leadership training aims to nurture “T-shaped” professionals—individuals with deep domain knowledge and broad interdisciplinary skills.
The agreement was formalised during an on-campus industry interaction session attended by senior leadership, faculty members, and students, marking a new chapter in BIMTECH’s commitment to delivering globally relevant management education.
With a strong legacy inspired by its founders and a global alumni network, BIMTECH continues to expand its academic offerings and industry partnerships. The collaboration with Swiss Re India reinforces its position as a leading institution driving innovation and excellence in management education, particularly in the specialised field of insurance and reinsurance.
