As the results of Madhyamik and exams conducted by the West Bengal Board of Madrasah Education were declared on Friday and Saturday, a number of students shone bright despite braving odds.

Name: Tushar Debnath of Baxirhat Ucchatar Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Cooch Behar

Score: 684/700

Son of a vegetable seller, Tushar has secured ninth rank in the state withsome others.

Tapan Debnath, his father, runs a vegetable stall in Baxirhat. The family lives in a tinned-roof hutment. “Every day, I would study eight to ten hours. I couldn’t afford to buy books and a number of teachers helped me with books and stationery,” he said.

Tushar wants to be a doctor. “We understand his dreams but don’t know how to finance them,” said Tapan.

Name: Sagnik Bakshi of AC Institution, Malda

Score: 683/ 700

Son of auto-rickshaw driver Ajit Kumar Bakshi and homemaker Madhabi Bakshi, Sagnik’s 10th rank in the state was no cakewalk.

With a monthly income of Rs 8,000, Ajit could not afford to buy books for Sagnik. But his school teachers allowed him to borrow books from the school library.

“We live in a rented home with one room and a toilet. We cook on the verandah. But my son is a good student with big dreams. I just want him to be able to continue his studies,” said the father.

Name: Subir Aich of Bhatibari High School, Alipurduar.

Score: 622/700

Subir, who stays in Bhatibari of Alipurduar, got 89 per cent marks in Madhyamik, surprising his daily wage earner father Sujoy. Sujoy goes to Assam every day to work and makes Rs 400 a day.

Subir wants to be a doctor but doesn’t know how his parents would is equally perplexed as his parents. “I don’t know whether I can eventually study in the science stream, considering the financial constraints of my family,” he said.

Name: Debangshu Roy of Tarai Tarapada Adarsha Vidyalaya, Siliguri

Score: 616/700

Debangshu, whose father barely makes around Rs 7,000 a month as a sweetmeat shop worker, wants to be a software engineer. “My father is my inspiration, he wants me to study,” said the boy.

Name: Mohammad Muktadur Rahaman of Fatekhani BMS High Madrasah, Malda

Score: 774/ 800

A resident of Kushabari village in Kaliachak-I block, Muktadur ranked third inthe state in the madrasah exam.

Mohammad Sahadat Hossain, his father, is an onion vendor who earns around Rs 6,000. Sabina Khatun, his mother, earns a little by rolling “bidis.”

Muktadur, who loves maths and wants to be an engineer, doesn’t know if he can study further. “We feel helpless,” said the father.
