The West Bengal government, in association with the higher education department, is introducing a student internship scheme for graduates. Students will have to be residents of West Bengal, be under 40 years old, and have graduated with 60% marks in their final year (degree or diploma programmes). This also includes those from ITI or polytechnic institutes in the state.

Existing students can apply as well but they will have to obtain a ‘no- objection certificate’ from their respective institutes.

The government plans to absorb 6,000 interns every year and will pay Rs 5000 per month as stipend. The internship will last for a year and each student will be reviewed at the end of their tenure and certificates will be handed out. To make the application process simpler, the government is also going to launch a website soon and applicants will be chosen by a selection committee.

The West Bengal government has also informed various institutes that once the NOC has been issued, they will not entertain any complaints regarding any negative effect on the intern’s ongoing education.

Interns will be placed at various state government offices, including zillas and parishads, and the posting will be close to the applicant’s location.
