Engineering Services Examination (ESE), also referred to as IES (Indian Engineering Services), is a national-level exam given to engineering graduates by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Candidates who pass the UPSC ESE exam will be classified as class-1 officers by the Indian government and work as civil engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, electronics engineers, and communications engineers.

The notification provides specifics on the UPSC ESE 2023 exam, such as the number of vacancies, application and exam deadlines, eligibility requirements, syllabus, and exam pattern. The commission will issue the UPSC ESE application form 2023 in addition to the notification.

UPSC ESE 2023: How to apply

Here are the steps for aspirants to follow to register for UPSC ESE 2023 Examination:

Step 1: Visit the official website of UPSC

Step 2: On the homepage, click on Apply Online

Step 3: Do the One Time Registration (OTR) by providing your email id or phone number

Step 4: After registering, you will receive the login credentials

Step 5: Fill out the application form with all the relevant information

Step 6: Pay the application fee

Step 7: Submit the application form, download it as a PDF and take a printout as well for future reference.

UPSC ESE 2023: Application Fee

Candidates (excepting Female/SC/ST/PwBD who are exempted from payment of fee) are required to pay a fee of Rs. 200/- ( Rupees Two Hundred only) either by remitting the money in any Branch of State Bank of India or by using Visa/Master/RuPay Credit/Debit Card/UPI Payment or by using Internet Banking of any Bank.

UPSC ESE 2023: Eligibility Criteria

Aspirants who are interested in applying for UPSC ESE Examination must meet the eligibility criteria set by the official authorities which are as follow:

  • Age:
  1. A candidate for this examination must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on the 1st January 2023 i.e., he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd January 1993 and not later than 1st January 2002.
  2. The upper age limit of 30 years will be relaxable up to 35 years in the case of Government servants.
  • Nationality: A candidate must be either:

(a) a citizen of India, or

(b) a subject of Nepal, or

(c) a subject of Bhutan, or

(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st of January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently setting in India.

  • Educational Qualification: For admission to the examination, a candidate must have –

(a) obtained a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956; or

(b) passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India); or

(c) obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/College/Institution and under such conditions as may be recognised by the Government for the purpose from time to time, or

(d) passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India); or

(e) passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India; or

(f) passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November 1959

UPSC ESE 2023: Vacancy Details

Recruitment on the results of this examination will be made to the Services/ Posts under the following categories:-

Category I-Civil Engineering.

Category II-Mechanical Engineering.

Category III-Electrical Engineering.

Category IV-Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

The number of vacancies to be filled on the results of the examination is expected to be approximately 327 including 11 vacancies for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) (7 vacancies for Locomotor Disability including Leprosy cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack victims and Muscular Dystrophy, 02 vacancies for Hard of Hearing 01 vacancy for Specific Learning Disability and 01 vacancies for Multiple Disability).

The number of vacancies is liable to alteration. Reservations will be made for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) as well as Persons with Benchmark Disability Category in respect of vacancies as may be fixed by the Government of India.

UPSC ESE 2023: Exam Pattern

The examination shall be conducted according to the following plan:—

(i) Stage-I: Engineering Services (Preliminary/Stage-I) Examination (Objective Type Papers) for the selection of candidates for the Stage-II: Engineering Services (Main/Stage-II) Examination;

(ii) Stage-II: Engineering Services (Main/Stage-II) Examination (Conventional Type Papers)

(iii) Stage-III: Personality Test
