Case Mania 2022, a business management workshop focused on case studies, was organised by Universal Business School (UBS) in Mumbai recently to mark the first World Case Teaching Day on February 2.

The workshop, held virtually, was organised by the B-school’s Universal Case Research Centre (UCRC), and over 40 students attended it under mentorship of faculty members.

The agenda of the workshop was to help the students draft and unriddle cases, improve their problem-solving abilities and equip them with pressure handling techniques. The workshop also dealt with cases on topics that may be new to the students in a bid to help them broaden their perspectives.

"The primary objective of this case-study-teaching workshop was to provide the participants an opportunity to draft and solve cases on different academic areas under the guidance of our professors. Case studies are an excellent way of engaging the students by bringing real-life experiences to the class. It helps in building their judgemental skills," said Asha Bhatia, director of UCRC.

Tarun Anand, founder and chairman of UBS, believes that students and teachers in higher education management programmes can achieve learning objectives better through the case study method of teaching.

This method, he said, is also noted for its high student engagement. “This kind of workshop is an endeavour to develop a case writing culture in Indian B-schools,” Anand added.

Sharing her experience, Aakriti Kushwaha, a senior year management student of Global MBA programme at the B-school, said, " It was a great opportunity for all of us to write a caselet under the mentorship of professors. We could show our creativity, managerial and problem-solving skills."

UCRC is a non-profit initiative of UBS that was launched in February 2021. The research centre works in the area of research, case writing, industry-academia collaboration and teaching methods in business education. The centre focuses on case studies in fields such as business, operations, innovation, finance, marketing, organisation culture, ethics, family-owned business, social enterprises, corporate governance and e-commerce in India and Asia.
