The department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) in West Bengal has asked district magistrates to communicate to state-run schools about adhering to specifications on school uniforms.

The uniforms in the specified colours, logo, school bags and shoes will be made by self-help groups (SHGs) under the MSME, a notice from the department said.

"The entire thing will come into effect once the SHGs complete the manufacturing of uniforms, bags, and footwear as per specified norms and code in colour and design," an official said. Till then, the existing uniforms of the schools concerned will continue, he added.

The decision is aimed at ending disparity in schools as this move will ensure that students of all financial backgrounds will be wearing the same kind of uniform in a class, the official said.

Students of all government, semi-government and government-aided schools in West Bengal will have sky-blue and white uniforms stitched by members of self-help groups (SHGs), the Mamata Banerjee-led government had announced earlier this month.

The government has notified that till Class V, male students will be given a full-pant with a full-sleeve shirt and a half-sleeve shirt with a half-pant. From classes VI to VIII, male students will be given a full-sleeve shirt, half-sleeve shirt with two full length pants.

Female students till Class V will receive two shirts, one skirt and a tunic, while girls of Classes VI to VIII will receive two salwar-kameez sets with one dupatta.
