On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day on June 1, Modern English School, Guwahati, Assam organised a series of activities to educate and sensitize students on the health risks of consuming tobacco.

To commemorate the day, the school conducted an interactive session for students of Class 8 under the 'Lecture Series 2022- The Academic Learnathon for a better tomorrow'. The session was conducted by Dr Shantanu Kumar Das, MBBS, MS and chief coordinator project - CHILD. It focused on educating students about the ill effects of consuming tobacco in any form and its impact on their bodies.

Students up to Class 5 created artwork on the theme environment, while students from Class 6 onwards created posters and slogans on topics like quit smoking, health is wealth and dangers of smoking. The school also introduced a student board for them to exhibit their thoughts in a creative way.

According to the fourth round of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS-4) released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), about one-fifth of the students, aged between 13 to 15 years, use some form of tobacco. Due to various awareness initiatives taken by the government, there has been a 42 per cent decline in tobacco usage among this age group in the last decade.
