Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi has announced a night curfew on its campus from 10 pm to 5 am in view of a ‘yellow alert’ issued in the capital owing to the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

The order, passed on December 29, has been put into action immediately according to the university. JNU further informed that all offline academic activities will remain suspended and the Dr B R Ambedkar Central Library will remain closed till further notice.

However, those engaged in emergency services and those who require to travel for medical emergencies and the supply of essential goods are allowed to produce valid identity cards to enter and exit the campus, the university said in its order.

People coming from or going to the airport, railway station and ISBTs are allowed to travel on production of valid tickets.

“All authorised shops of shopping complexes, Tapti, Paschimabad, Poorvanchal complexes and so on are allowed to open between 10 am and 8 pm on an odd-even basis. All authorised stand-alone shops and single shops of residential areas are allowed to open between 10 am and 8 pm on all days without restriction of odd-even. All authorised canteens are allowed to open with 50% seating capacity from 8 am to 10 pm,” the JNU order further added.

The university also directed its security branch to ensure that COVID-appropriate behaviour like wearing face masks is being followed and social distancing is being maintained on campus.

The security branch of the university is to ensure effective checking of the movement of people and vehicles in the JNU campus by putting adequate number of checking points with the objective to prevent unnecessary movement of people on the campus roads.

According to instructions from the varsity, only outdoor yoga activity is allowed. Campus gates will remain closed for all during the curfew, except for emergency movement. Campus residents have been asked not to move within the campus during the curfew hours.

Schools, colleges, cinemas and gyms will remain closed in New Delhi, shops dealing in non-essential items will open on an odd-even basis, and metro trains will run with 50% seating capacity, according to the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) department.

The national capital reported 496 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, making it the highest single day spike in the last six months. The positivity rate also rose to 0.89%.
