More than 20 people, eight of them students, have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur.

Among those freshly infected, there are 12 faculty members and non-teaching staff.

Sixty COVID cases, including students and researchers, were reported on the IIT Kharagpur campus between January 1 and.

“The fresh infections were reported in the last two-three days as the authorities have adopted a strategy of testing and tracing to contain the spread of the disease,” said Tamal Nath, registrar, IIT Kharagpur.

All the previous cases have recovered from the disease and are now either in isolation or have returned to normal activities. None of those who recovered from the coronavirus infection have left the campus, Nath said.

The newly infected patients have mild symptoms of COVID-19 and the on-campus medical care team is monitoring their condition regularly.

The institute has no plans to resume on-campus activities. Online classes will continue in view of the prevailing pandemic situation.
