IIT (ISM) Dhanbad celebrated its 96th foundation day virtually on December 9, felicitating 35 faculty members and 36 students for their achievements in research and academics both at national and international forums.

Six faculties were given the Inder Mohan Thapar Award-2020 for various research projects. Three faculties and one staff were given a long service award for serving the institution for 25 years.

The chief guest of the event was Prem Vrat, chairperson, Board of governors of the institute. He virtually addressed the students and the faculty on ‘New Education Policy (NEP): Challenges and Opportunities’, and delved on the key aspects of the policy as well as the challenges it faces in its implementation.

According to Vrat, NEP 2020 is a bold, transformative strategy that looks at education holistically from basic to secondary to tertiary levels and fosters multidisciplinary in higher education. It is modular, flexible and holistic with a focus on quality, accreditation and ranking.

NEP aspires to make Indian education worldwide to be respected globally.

He also said that the policy has been made to enable the Indian education system to be respected worldwide. It is faculty-led, student-centered, technology-enabled, and allows students to come and go as they like to pursue their passion. Its emphasis on integrating Indian knowledge systems and values, as well as the freedom to pursue engineering and technology education in Hindi and in one’s mother language will aid in enhancing employability while maintaining a focus on English as an international link language.

Rajiv Shekhar, director IIT (ISM) in his address to the students emphasised on the achievements during the last year and the vision for the future especially through lectures from domain experts and more thrust on laboratory sessions. According to him, software development would continue to be a focus area for the institution along with the need to promote innovative ideas.

The welcome address was given by Rajni Singh, dean - media and branding IIT (ISM).

A bakul tree was also planted at the campus on the occasion of Foundation Day in line with the guidelines of the Union HRD ministry.
