Participants were offered guidance on improving emotional intelligence, managing stress, empathizing with others and achieving set goals

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sambalpur organised a ‘Management Development Programme on Women Leadership’ on campus for the women officers of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd -- a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd. that has coal mines across Odisha.

The two-day workshop began on December 6 and was attended by 30 women employees of Mahanadi Coalfields. The programme was inaugurated by IIM Sambalpur director Mahadeo Jaiswal and Keshav Rao, director personnel, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd.

The leadership programme aimed to offer guidance on how to sustain oneself in the ever-changing business -- with social and emotional help to keep up with various transformations in the current scenario -- and assist in value creation as well.

IIM faculty members and resource persons Shikha Bhardwaj, Atri Sengupta and Bhumika Gupta shared their knowledge with the women officers, speaking about emotional intelligence and stress management; work-life-family integration; and empathetic communication.

Jaiswal said, “This programme is quite special to IIM Sambalpur as we believe in inclusivity in all aspects. As an institute, we strongly contribute to an ecosystem of developing women leaders at the workplace. In the present scenario of enhanced technology and post-pandemic changes at the workplace, women will get more opportunities to perform better.”

The sessions imparted knowledge and enlightened the members about their own emotional well-being, apart from stress management at work. The other topics discussed included improving emotional intelligence, which helps in assisting the workforce in managing stress; building strong relationships; empathizing with others; and achieving set goals.

Rao said, “Such programmes are not only important for higher leadership roles, but also for women empowerment. It is important for organisations to develop a conducive work environment that facilitates women to perform. The other gender plays a crucial role in supporting women to lead. Therefore, it calls for a collective responsibility among family, organisations and institutions at large.”

IIM Sambalpur is a new generation IIM located in Sambalpur, Odisha. It was established in 2015. IIM Sambalpur is an Institute of National Importance according to the IIM 2017 Act. The foundation stone of the permanent campus of IIM Sambalpur was laid by prime minister Narendra Modi on January 2, 2021. The permanent campus is likely to be operational in 2022.
