The institute will consider class X and class XI performance of candidates along with work experience during the shortlisting process for admissions
The decision was taken as many universities and colleges could not hold examinations due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the past two years and awarded marks to students on varied criteria

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, one of the leading B-schools in India, will not consider the marks obtained by candidates in Bachelor’s degree for admissions in the 2022-24 batch of its MBA programme.

The institute will now consider the marks obtained by the candidates in class X and class XII exams, and work experience, if any, for admissions. The decision, according to a statement from the institute, was taken in the wake of the fact that many universities and colleges could not hold examinations in the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An official notice published on IIM Ahmedabad’s official website read, “For the last two years, many universities could not conduct exams and based on varied criteria gave pass/promotion certificates. Considering this, the CAT Committee of 2021 had allowed candidates to take CAT 2021 without requiring any minimum percentage of marks in Bachelor’s degree. On account of this, the Admissions Committee of IIM Ahmedabad decided to do away with the Bachelor’s degree component from the shortlisting criteria and to apply it uniformly to all the candidates.”

The Academic Rating (AR) score of a candidate is calculated on the basis of marks obtained in class X, class XII, Bachelor’s degree and past work experience. The AR will now be calculated on a scale of 25, which will be based on the candidates’ Class X and XII marks and on work experience. Zero points will be added to the AR score for marks obtained in Bachelor’s degree.

The following formula will be used for computing the Composite Score (CS):

CS = 0.35* (Pro-rated AR Score/35) + 0.65* (Normalized overall CAT Score)

Pro-rated AR Score= [(AR score computed by taking 0 points for Bachelor’s degree)/25] x35

Admission in IIM Ahmedabad is based on the Common Admission Test (CAT), which is conducted nationwide, and subsequent rounds of personal interviews. The students are shortlisted on the basis of their CAT scores, academic performance and interviews. Selected students must have scholastic achievements in Arts, Commerce, Science and professional streams like Engineering, Technology and Medicine.

Candidates who have achievements in extra-curricular and organisational activities are also given priority. The postgraduation programme at the institute is pursued by fresh graduates and individuals with work experience in varied sectors like Finance, Consulting, IT/ITeS, FMCG/Retail, Engineering, PSUs, etc.

The first year of the programme comprise a set of compulsory courses to create a solid foundation for all participants across all functional areas of management. In the second year, candidates choose courses from a wide range of electives that can be taken in any combination. Candidates can choose from areas of management like Marketing, Finance, Strategy, Consulting, Operations, HR, etc.

The second year also offers a one-term exchange programme with more than 80 management schools worldwide, and a dual degree programme with select schools.
