The Indian Institute of Art and Design (IIAD) held its annual convocation for graduating batches 2020 and 2021 at the India International Centre (IIC), Delhi.

Priyanka Chaturvedi, MP - Rajya Sabha, was the chief guest for the event. Known for her work in women empowerment and education, she delivered the convocation address, sharing 10 learnings from her political career and life experiences. Chaturvedi particularly emphasised on the phrase, “pay back to society” and asked the students to “contribute to the society we all are living in”.

She also praised the students for their extraordinary work throughout their journey.

Jitin Chadha, director - IIAD, Usha Patel, dean - academics, IIAD, along with other course leaders, professors and lecturers were also present at the event to encourage and motivate the students for their achievements.

Steven Spier, vice-chancellor, Kingston University, Mandy Ure, dean - Kingston School of Art, Damian Chapman, head of School of Design, Kingston School of Art, also addressed the convocation virtually and congratulated the students.

The convocation began with the congratulatory speech by Chadha, who expressed his pride at the students’ achievements and also emphasised on the importance of empathy in life and how all the hard-work and perseverance of the students, their teachers and mentors had come to fruition after a particularly challenging two years of the pandemic.

This was followed with the welcome address by Patel. Speaking on the occasion, she touched upon the potential response and impact of Covid-19 on higher education. Talking about the future of design she concluded her speech saying, “We need future designers who would understand long- term human centric approaches, who are sensitive and would contribute for better lives.”

Students of Fashion Design, Interior Architecture and Design and Communication Design from batches 2020 and 2021 were awarded BA (honours) degrees by Kingston University. Students who completed their post graduation in Fashion Business Management and Fashion Design in the year of 2021 were also awarded their MA degrees.

The convocation concluded with the pledge where the new graduates promised to uphold the sanctity and dignity of their profession. Parul Gupta from Fashion Design 2020 and Shreyasree Ghosh from Communication Design 2021 also addressed the convocation sharing their journey throughout the graduating years and cherished the memories spent at IIAD.
