Delhi University’s admission directive for 2021-2022 says only Class XII marks will be taken into account
Kerala and a few other state boards issue mark sheets with marks of both Classes XI and XII

The Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) has challenged in Delhi Court the varsity's decision to consider only Class XII marks for admission of students from Kerala state board that determines grades by combining marks of Classes XI and XII.

Justice Prateek Jalan has asked the counsel for DUSU to satisfy the court on the union's locus standi in filing this petition on the next date of hearing on November 10.

The counsel for the university was not present at the hearing and the court asked the DUSU counsel Ashish Dixit to serve the petition copy to him.

The appeal filed by DUSU termed the conduct of the varsity “arbitrary, irrational and unfair” and accused the authorities of violating the fundamental and legal rights of students.

DUSU has pointed out that some state boards of education, including the Directorate of General Education (Higher Secondary Wing), Government of Kerala, gives combined marks for both Classes XI and XII on the mark sheets. The policy explicitly states that to determine grades of students, combined marks of both classes shall be considered.

The petition, filed through advocate Ashish Dixit, said the Delhi University had for several years stated in its admission bulletin that where state boards publish marks of both Classes XI and XII, merit of students shall be determined on the basis of such consolidated mark sheets.

But DU decided in its admission process of 2021-2022 that students would only be required to fill in Class XII marks. When the admissions began for the 2021-2022 session, colleges objected to mark sheets carrying marks of both Classes XI and XII.

The university initially directed colleges to put such cases on hold but soon after DU admissions circulated an asserting that the Admission Advisory Committee had decided that only Class XII marks wou;d be considered.

DUSU said its representatives had met the highest officials of the university but they have not acted in any manner for the welfare of students.
