The University of Delhi has grand plans for its centenary celebrations in May, and has set aside Rs 10 crore that would cover the costs of several events lined up for the year-long commemoration.

A coffee table book is also on the cards to mark the occasion, containing old photographs right from the time the varsity came into being.

According to the university development fund committee, DU would be completing 100 years of glorious service to the country in May 2022. The university has grown from strength to strength since its inception in the pre-Independence era in 1922. The committee endorsed the decision of the university to celebrate the occasion in a grand way and approved the allocation of the Rs 10 crore amount for expenditure to be incurred on the centenary year celebrations of the university.

The committee comprises former pro vice-chancellor P C Joshi and registrar Vikas Gupta. The recommendations of the committee were accepted by the executive council (EC), the highest decision making body of the university, in its meeting held on December 17, 2021.

The centenary celebrations will start from May 1, and the university has planned several events in a year-long celebration which will continue till May 1, 2023.

DU vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh said a number of constructive events have been planned to mark the centenary year. The university’s former vice-chancellors will also be felicitated as part of the celebration.

“While celebrating the centenary year, we, at the University of Delhi and its constituent and affiliated colleges, forming an integral part of the university community, may envisage programmes and constructive events which create ample memorable moments for all of us to rejoice not only during the centenary year but also for the next century as well,” Singh added.

However, a senior official from the varsity said that the plans will depend on how the COVID-19 situation will pan out in the country, especially keeping the Omicron variant in mind.
