The staff and students of BBIT Public School in Budge Budge, Kolkata, organised a ‘Daan Utsav’ to spread the festive cheer of Diwali among underprivileged children on November 2, distributing new blankets, sweets and clothes to about 100 kids from the Nangi slum near Budge Budge railway station.
Among themselves, the students managed to collect money to buy the new blankets and sweets, and also gathered enough old clothes and toys in good condition to distribute among the underprivileged children in the neighbouring slum.
All the clothes and toys were washed and sanitized before being handed over to the slum children.
According to the school officials, the main objective of the initiative was to bring equal joy among all children and their families on the auspicious occasion of Diwali.
The blankets, sweets, clothes and toys were distributed by the staff, including BBIT Public School vice-chairman K K Gupta, school principal Munmun Nath and other members of the school.
“This is a proud moment for BBIT Public school,” said Gupta, adding, “Blessed are those who can give without remembering and take without forgetting, leaving a lasting impression of kindness and gratitude forever within. I am extremely glad that our students have come forward with such an initiative. As much as we are supporting them, we are also encouraging them to take these important steps at such an early stage of their lives.”
Speaking about the school’s initiative, Nath said, “Never stop doing little things for others; sometimes these little things occupy the biggest portion of their heart. When we help others, it should not be done with the thought of getting something in return. Our kindness must be our permanent quality. As the principal of the school, I am overwhelmed to see these students doing such noble work for the society, especially for children like them who are less privileged to afford such happiness.”
BBIT Public School is a co-educational institution founded in 2015. It is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and is managed by the Jagannath Gupta Family Trust. The school offers education to children from Nursery to Class XII.
