In honour of Henry Dunant, the man who co-founded both the Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is observed every year on 8 May. He was born on 8 May 1828 in Geneva and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

World Red Cross Day 2023: History of the day

The tenets of the Red Cross and Red Crescent international movement are honoured on this day. It is often referred to as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. It is intended for those who experience food insecurity, are a victim of any of a variety of natural disasters, conflict, as well as pandemic diseases.
