National Education Day is observed on 11 November every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of the first education minister of independent India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad–the man responsible for spreading the light of education in India. He served as the Education Minister from 1947 to 1958 and believed that education should be a fundamental right for every citizen of the country. Keeping his vision alive, on this National Education Day 2022 here's looking at a few interesting facts about Maulana Abul Kalam Azad:

In the year 1956 Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was elected as the president of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) General Conference held in Delhi.

He was one of the key brains behind the setting up of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
British library
He was nominated as a member of the foundation committee and was the key person behind the establishment of the popular Jamia Millia Islamia Institute in Aligarh. The main gate of the campus is named after him.

He started writing at a very early age under the pen name ‘Azad’. This was later given to him as an identity. He contributed to famous literary works, including ‘India wins Freedom’, which was authored by him.
