National Doctor’s Day is celebrated in India annually on 1 July. The day commemorates the birth of Bidhan Chandra Roy, a medical practitioner who fought for independence. It was first celebrated in 1991 to mark and honour Mahatma Gandhi’s personal doctor who was also the Chief Minister of West Bengal. This year’s theme for National Doctor’s Day “Celebrating Resilience and Healing Hands”, aims to recognise the valuable efforts of our medical professionals during the Covid-19 pandemic.

National Doctors’ Day was celebrated by Pre-Primary Unit children of ​​Vivekananda Mission School, Joka (Nursery I to Class I) on Friday 30 June and Monday, 3 July. Doctor-parents were invited through an e-card sent to the class WhatsApp group. The response was huge. Doctors who could not make time on these days had sent their gratitude through their messages and had greatly appreciated the school's initiative of arranging such a program.16 doctor-parents attended the programme. The doctor-parents interacted with the children and suggested how they can keep themselves healthy. Children performed recitations, songs and skits to entertain the doctors. The doctors were gifted hand-made cards, smileys, vases/wall hangings made by our children along with saplings. Everyone enjoyed the session thoroughly.

The Primary Unit children (Classes II-IV) celebrated National Doctor's Day on 30 June. An assembly talk was done followed by a short skit performed by the students. On 3 June, Class II celebrated National Doctor's Day by inviting the doctor-parent. The doctor-parent graced the occasion and enjoyed the programme which consisted of an introductory speech by a student followed by a short skit. He also appreciated the endeavour of the school for celebrating this day. He interacted with the children and suggested how they can keep themselves healthy. Children gave a greeting card and a sapling as a token of gratitude and thanksgiving.

The Middle School (Classes V-VII) had an assembly talk. The students also attended interactive sessions conducted by teachers to celebrate the day. The students whose parents are doctors, shared what they learnt from their parents, especially during the pandemic. With the help of this year’s theme, the interactive session highlighted the tireless efforts of the doctors during Covid-19. Assembly Talk was also conducted for the students of Classes VIII-XII, to observe this day.
