QS World Rankings 2024: IIT Guwahati enters the World’s Top 25% Institutions List

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has achieved a spot in the World’s Top 25% Institutions List in the QS World University Rankings 2024. The Institute has achieved rank 364 in the world in the overall ranking and ranks 7 in India. With this, the Institute has improved its global rank by 20 places and its Indian rank by 1 place.

QS World University Rankings 2024 released on 27th June 2023 indicates that since 2014, IIT Guwahati has improved its rank by at least 237 places from 601-650 range in 2014 to 364th in 2023. At rank 32 globally, the Research Citations per Faculty is the strongest indicator for IIT Guwahati with an average publication per faculty of >5.0.

The research done at the institute has an impact on both the global and local scale. The QS World University Rankings have been published since 2004 and take the following parameters into consideration to decide their ranking:

  • Employer Reputation
  • Faculty Student Ratio
  • Citations per Faculty
  • International Faculty Ratio
  • International Student Ratio
  • Employment Outcome
  • International Research Network
  • Sustainability

For the 2024 edition, 2963 institutions were evaluated across the world and 1503 institutions were ranked. In India 44 institutions have been ranked this year.

The institute has consistently maintained its high position in various national and international rankings. In the recently launched National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) declared by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the Institute has held 7th position in the ‘Engineering’ category and 9th position in ‘Overall’ and ‘Research’ Category in the country.

ABOUT IIT GUWAHATI

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati established in 1994 has completed 25 years of glorious existence in 2019. At present, the Institute has eleven departments, nine inter-disciplinary academic centres and five schools covering all the major engineering, science, healthcare, management and humanities disciplines, offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc, MBA and PhD programmes. The institute offers a residential campus to 435 faculty members and more than 8,000 students at present.

IIT Guwahati has retained the 7th position among the best engineering institutions of the country and 9th position in both ‘Overall’ and ‘Research’ Categories in the ‘India Rankings 2023’ declared by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Union Ministry of Education.

IIT Guwahati has achieved rank 6 in the SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy) globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023 and is the only academic institution in India that occupied a place among the top 100 world universities – under 50 years of age – ranked by London-based Times Higher Education (THE) in 2014 and continues to maintain its superior position even today in various International Rankings. IIT Guwahati gained rank 37 globally in the ‘Research Citations per Faculty’ category and overall 364 rank in the QS World University Rankings 2024.

Among other frontier areas of research and innovation, IIT Guwahati is working towards augmenting critical science research initiatives in Genomics, Developmental Biology, Health Care and Bioinformatics and Flexible Electronics, among numerous other areas.
