The Post Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) recently made it clear that PG medical students should be compensated with a stipend for an extended term of training while on maternity leave.

In its most recent announcement, the NMC stated that "They (PG women students on maternity leave) should be offered a stipend for the extended term of training if the same has not been granted during the maternity leave time."

"The topic of issuance of leave to PG students shall be governed as per separate State Government Rules," it stated, citing PGMEB, 2000, Clause 13.3.

The NMC instructed the medical education and college directorates to stop charging interns fees in May 2022. In addition, it requested that government employees in all states and union territories pay foreign medical graduates (FMGs) stipends that are comparable to those paid to Indian medical graduates.
