The department of school education, Ladakh hosted the UT (Union Territory) level Kala Utsav competition in the districts of Leh and Kargil on December 8 in both online and offline modes.

The department of school education and literacy, Union ministry of education (MOE), had launched Kala Utsav in 2015 under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan umbrella to promote arts in education by nurturing and showcasing the artistic talent of school students at the secondary level in the country.

Safdar Ali, director of school education at UT Ladakh, spoke on the occasion, emphasising on the importance of the arts in the overall personality development of a child.

Juries from both the districts assessed the performances of the district finalists through live streaming as well as live performances.

Students of both the districts performed vocal music, traditional folk, instrumental music on traditional folk songs, folk dance, visual arts (2D), visual arts (3D), and indigenous toys and games.

The finalists selected for representing Ladakh in Kala Utsav 2021 are:

  • Changchup Dorje, Class X, Govt High School (GHS) Chumathang, Leh in the category of folk dance.
  • Rinchen Dolker, Class XII, Govt Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Chuchot Shamma, Leh in the category of folk dance.
  • Norboo Zangpo, Class XI, GHSS, Diskit, Nubra in the category of folk song.
  • Rigzen Angmo, Class XII, Lamdon Model Senior Secondary School, Leh in the category of folk song.
  • Tsering Kunsal, Class XII, Lamdon Model Senior Secondary School, Leh in the category of traditional instrument.
  • Mustafa Ali, Class IX, GHSS, Trespone, Kargil in the category of visual art (2D).
  • Kaneez Fatima, Class X, GHS, Baroo, Kargil in the category of visual art (2D).
  • Sonam Stanzin, Class IX, GHS, Liker, Leh in the category of visual art (3D).
  • Zarifa Banoo, Class XI, GHSS, Sankoo in the category of visual art (3D).
  • Shujat Ali, Class XI, Army Goodwill School, Harka Bahadur, Kargil in the category of indigenous toys and games.
  • Saira Bano, Class XI, GHSS, Diskit in the category of indigenous toys and games.

The finalists will get the opportunity to take part in the national-level Kala Utsav 2021 through live streaming which will be held in January 2022.
