On November 25, in the virtual presence of union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, IIT Roorkee marked the inauguration of their 175 years celebration of imparting technical education.

IIT Roorkee, which was founded in 1847 as the Roorkee Civil Engineering College in British India, will celebrate its 175 years of imparting education in technology. A year-long celebration, which began on November 25 and will continue till November 24, 2022, is on the calendar.

As a part of the celebrations, various cultural, academic, sports and outreach activities are going to be held, which will see participation from students, faculty members, staff and alumni.

IIT Roorkee was recognised as Roorkee Civil Engineering College from 1847 to 1854. In 1854, it was renamed to Thomason College of Civil Engineering. It became a university in 1947, and in 2001 it got the status of the Indian Institute of Technology.

Congratulating the institute, Pradhan said, “IIT Roorkee has not only been the pioneer in the field of research and innovation but also fostered the academia-industry relationship for the larger interest of society and the nation. I heartily congratulate the alumni of IIT Roorkee for making distinguished contributions with its reverberating effects nationally and globally and wish for their continued success.”

On November 25, IIT Roorkee announced an initiative for creation of research capacity that will partner with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) around IIT Roorkee and invite school students to visit the institute.

On the occasion, Ajit K. Chaturvedi, director of IIT Roorkee, said, “Today is a day to renew our efforts so that we continue to grow, continue to strengthen ourselves, and most importantly, continue to improve our standing among our peers on the global stage. I am happy to share that in our 175th year, we will be inaugurating two high-impact projects. The first one is a 1.3 PetaFLOPS supercomputing facility as a part of the national supercomputing mission, and the second project is a SCADA-based Smart Energy Management System, which will establish an integrated monitoring analytics and control centre for systems ranging from energy assets to transport, water, and waste.”

To mark its 175th Foundation Day ceremony, the institute also announced six new infrastructure projects. It also has begun an initiative to focus on knowledge transfer for creating an ecosystem for startups at higher education institutions across Roorkee. This will be done by offering exclusive mentorship and guidance. There might also be incubation support by the Technology Incubation and Entrepreneurship Development Society (TIDES) at the institute.
