Gossner College, Ranchi, celebrated Satyajit Ray’s birth anniversary with a screening of two films by young filmmakers and a discussed on the maestro.

May 2, 2002, marked the end of Ray’s centenary year celebrations. Ray, born on May 2, 1921, would have turned 100 in 2021.

Anuj Kumar, a faculty member of the Mass Communication department, spoke about Satyajit Ray’s contribution to Indian cinema.

“Satyajit Ray made many great films, which have been acclaimed around the world. His films are a lesson for all those interested in filmmaking as a career. Students can learn about filmmaking by watching his films,” Anuj Kumar said.

The programme hosted by the Mass Communication department of the college was attended by Purushotam Kumar, director of internationally acclaimed short films And He Lost, Khataara and Lost Money.

Purushotam Kumar’s film in Mundari, Bandha Khet, was screened at the programme. The critically acclaimed film has been screened at film festivals in several countries, including New Zealand, America and South Korea.

Dahleez, Purushotam Kumar’s first film in Nagpuri — a tribal dialect spoken in the Chhotanagpur area of Jharkhand — is due for release on May 6. The team members of Dahleez were also present at the programme.

Speaking about his latest film, the director said it is the story of a girl who struggles with her family to achieve her dream. Students were shown a trailer of the film.
