The timing of the Madhyamik and the state higher secondary examinations has been brought forward and will start at 9.45am instead of at noon this year.

Madhyamik (secondary) is scheduled from February 2 to February 12 and HS from February 16 to February 29.

A total of around 18 lakh students are expected to write the exams.

A notice signed by the secondary education board secretary, Subrata Ghose, on Thursday said: “After careful consideration and in response to various factors, it has been decided to reschedule the timing of the examination of Madhyamik. The new timing for examination will be 9.45am to 1pm.”

The officer-in-charge and the centre-secretary have been instructed to reach the custodians of question paper boxes by 6am. After collecting the boxes, they have to distribute the ones earmarked for exam venues under their jurisdiction and reach their centre by 8am, said the notice.

“This adjustment is made with the best intention of ensuring the best possible examination condition for all participants,” it said.

A notice signed by Chiranjeeb Bhattacharya, president of the state higher secondary council said: “This is for information of all Hols (head of institutions) and stakeholders that Higher Secondary Examination 2024 will be held on each day as per existing schedule with revised timing from 9.45am to 1pm (3 hours and 15 minutes) for all subjects except vocational subjects, visual art, music and health and physical education for which the timing would be from 9.45am to 11.45am (2 hours).”

“The timing was changed following a meeting with state government officials,” it said.

A board official said they had earlier decided to start the exam at noon because they are not holding the Class XI annual exams along with the HS this year. Till 2023, the council would hold the HS in the first half and the Class XI annual exam in the second half of the same day.
