Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT) Bombay has been billed the top Indian institute in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022 and ranked 42 worldwide.

The results were released by QS, a British company, on November 2.

A total of 118 Indian universities feature in the 2022 rankings — the seond-highest for a country after Mainland China’s 126 universities. Additionally, India has taken the main share of new entries, with 12 universities ranked for the first time.

IIT Bombay secured an overall score of 71 out of 100. The institute has a scored 81.4 in academic reputation, 96 in employer reputation, 23 in citation per faculty, 44.7 in faculty student ratio, 100 in staff with PhD 84.2 in papers per faculty, 78.5 international research network, 11.0 in international faculty, 4.4 in international students, 14.5 in inbound exchange and 8.3 in outbound exchange all scores out of a maximum of 100 points. Among these 11 indicators, staff with PhD indicates the strongest one for IIT Bombay with a rank of 18 regionally.

In the 2022 edition of regional rankings, IIT Bombay performed among the top 7% in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022. The institute was ranked 37th last year.

IIT Delhi is the only other Indian institution to be featured among the top 50, securing 45th rank. IIT Madras dropped four places to 54 this year. IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur are at 60th and 64th positions, respectively.

The first rank-holder in the World University Ranking 2021, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, has ranked 56 in the QS Asia University Rankings 2022. The University of Delhi (DU) is at the 77th position in QS Asia University Rankings 2022.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), IITs, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) have ranked in the 100-200 bracket this time.

Of the 18 nations, territories and special administrative regions that make up the Asian rankings, India has the highest number of top-100 universities in the staff with PhD indicator, taking up 40% of the places. Indian universities have 34% of the top 100 spots for research papers per faculty. However, only six Indian institutions from India have impact of the research produced and are among the top 100.
