The government has raised the number of medical schools, which has led to more MBBS seats. The number of medical colleges has increased by 82% from 387 in 2014 to 704.

Additionally, there has been a 110% growth in MBBS seats from 51,348 in 2014 to 1,07,948 as of today, and a 117% increase in PG seats from 31,185 in 2014 to 67,802.

With a preference for underserved areas and aspirational districts where there are no existing public or private medical colleges, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for the "Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals," with fund sharing between the Centre and State Governments in the ratio of 90:10 for North Eastern and Special Category States and 60:40 for others.

Three rounds of the Scheme saw the approval of 157 Government medical colleges in total. 101 medical colleges have received the Scheme's approval over the past five years.
