Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) celebrated ‘World Braille Day’ on their campus by conducting a number of programmes on January 4, 2022.
Every year, January 4 is recognised as World Braille Day to commemorate Louis Braille, the French educator who invented the system of Braille. Since then the Braille system (script) became a source of learning, knowledge and wisdom for visually impaired people across the globe.
Tasneem Fatima, pro vice-chancellor, JMI, met the visually-challenged faculty members of the university and heard their issues and assured them to address those in the best possible manner.
The programme witnessed the presence of all B.Ed and M.Ed students and faculty members such as Mohammad Asjad Ansari, Ansari Ahmad, Arif Mohammad, Mohammad Abrar Alam and many other faculty members. The programme ended with a formal vote of thanks by Saurabh Rey.

Naheed Zahoor, head of department, Teacher Training and Non-Formal Education, was chief guest for the event, and stressed on the importance of the contributions made by Louis Braille for the visually challenged people. She also encouraged the B.Ed and M.Ed special students to do quality research on Braille.
Mohhamad Faizullah Khan, programme coordinator, highlighted the purpose of the Braille Day and why it is celebrated as an international event.
The Child Guidance Centre (CGC) run by Zakir Husain Memorial Welfare Society, JMI celebrated World Braille Day under the leadership of Sara Begum, general-secretary of the Society.
The importance of Braille as a means of communication for the visually-impaired was discussed in detail and how it helps in creating awareness for the full realisation of human rights in an inclusive society. A discussion on how Braille literacy needs to be considered as an important aspect of education for the visually impaired in learning music, mathematics and science was also conducted during the programme.
