The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jodhpur is all set to launch new engineering-linked four-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) programmes in Chemistry and Physics along with specialisation. The institute aims to cater to the growing need and demand for modern technologies through these courses. These specialisations will help the students with opportunities in multiple interdisciplinary areas like entrepreneurship.

As per the official press release, during the first year, the programmes will focus on fundamental knowledge in basic science and engineering. The second and third years will focus on comprehensive theory and experiments in advanced concepts of Chemistry and Physics. And, in the concluding year, the programmes will enable students to specialise in a focused area at the forefront of science.

The courses are designed with regard to the interdisciplinary approach mentioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. One of the primary features of this programme’s curriculum is the flexibility of opting different specialisations.

BSc in Chemistry

The course has been designed with the aim of science-based engineering innovation. It is specifically aimed for graduate students and has application opportunities in areas including Pharmaceuticals, Agrochemicals, Materials and devices, Energy, Healthcare and Environment.

BSc in Physics

The programme aims to keep their primary focus on theoretical foundations and practical skills in fundamental and applied physics with the understanding of interdisciplinary subjects through theory, computation and hands-on training.

The graduates of this programme will have career opportunities in multiple areas like Green Energy and Sustainable Energy Materials, Photonics and Terahertz Technology/Communications, Quantum Technology and Communications, Quantum Open Systems, Flexible Electronics, Multifunctional Materials and Devices, Smart Energy for smart cities and Smart Healthcare.

As per the statement, the students from B.S. program will also be provided the opportunity to convert their 4-year B.S. program to 5-year B.S.- M.Tech dual degree program with respective specialisations.
