IIT Hyderabad inaugurates its leading-edge BME-BT building

IIT Hyderabad’s leading-edge building for the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology is ready to welcome students.

Director-general, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and secretary, Department of Health Research, ministry of health and family welfare, Government of India, Balram Bhargava inaugurating the building. 

The event has been successfully concluded in the presence of SAITO Mitsunori, chief representative, JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) as guest of honour from Japan, BoG chairman BVR Mohan Reddy, B.S Murty, director-IITH, deans, HoDs, faculty, staff and students of the institute.

The infrastructure inaugurated is a part of Phase-2 of the campus development project under the broader India-Japan collaboration through the JICA and MoE.

Congratulating IIT Hyderabad on the occasion, Bhargava said, “More than 80% of medical devices are imported in India, this close to 100,000 sqft state-of-the-art facility will act like a “karma bhumi” in the direction of making India self-reliant. With ICMR’s presence at IITH, many technologies, IPs, patents and start-ups will bring more frugal innovations.

Mitsunori added, “JICA has been associated with IITH for a long time under INDO-JAPAN collaborations. IITH has made significant contributions to India’s fight against COVID-19. We hope this facility will boost IITH’s efforts to serve vulnerable humanity.”

Some of the highlights of the building are the helical staircase, separate block of biotech classrooms with amphitheater. The building is constructed to carry out the present and future teaching and research needs in the field of Biotech and Biomedical Engineering. The construction activities are being carried out by reputed construction firms in compliance with national standards.
