Summary
Two teams from the institution, XSURGE Z4 and WONDERS 2.0, have won accolades at the pan-India competition for designing energy-efficient vehicles
The event was organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) India to encourage young engineers to innovate and come up with environment-friendly mobility solutions

Two teams of techies from the Birsa Institute of Technology (BIT), Sindri, in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad have bagged several awards under different categories at Efficycle 2021, a pan-India inter-college automobile design competition for undergraduate and graduate engineering students organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) India.

BIT Sindri’s team, XSURGE Z4, emerged as the fifth-best team in India in this competition. The team bagged the first position in the Project Plan category, second position in OC Review, and third position in Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CAD). The Best Woman Participant award also went to BIT Sindri, sources from the institution said.

“The 4-wheel Effique segment was introduced for the very first time this year and our team took the challenge to learn this new concept and compete for the same. The team has worked hard to design the bio hybrid urban commute that will drive the future of the automotive industry,” a spokesperson of BIT Sindri said.

WONDERS 2.0, another team of young engineers from the college, bagged the eighth position in India. This team secured the sixth position in Dynamic Event, and third position in both Figure of Eight Test and Acceleration Test.

“The WONDERS 2.0 team participated in the conventional hybrid segment that brought out the best in us and taught us to work together as a team. Our team has worked diligently on designing this human-powered vehicle with a compounded electric drive system offering varied usage in different fields,” said a team member.

According to the official website of Efficycle, “The objective of this event is to promote innovation and generate consciousness amongst the young engineers towards environment-friendly mobility solution.”

In Efficycle, teams are required to design energy efficient human-cum-electrically-powered three-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles. The participants are given points for design, ergonomics, aerodynamics and feasibility of the vehicle. The vehicle should be commercially viable as a product and should be able to attract consumers with its design, performance and drivability.

Rajan Kumar, assistant professor in the mechanical engineering department at BIT Sindri, was the faculty adviser for participants from the college, while senior administrative officer Ghanshyam Rai was the reference dean for both the participating teams.
