The Assam government is on a mission to assess schools across the state in a bid to improve the quality of education and make the teaching-learning process more accountable.
In an exercise called ‘Gunotsav’, the state will be evaluating over 46,000 schools covering around 42 lakh students, in two phases in 2022.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held a meeting on December 11 to discuss the detailed framework for the exercise. The meeting also laid the parameters for scholastic evaluation that would be conducted under the initiative. The first phase of the evaluation will be held from April 5-7 and the second phase, from April 20-22.
Ever since the pandemic, education has been adversely affected across the country. Elementary education has had a major setback, what with online classes turning out to be inaccessible for a majority of the children.
Gunotsav is going to be an accountable framework for improving the elementary education quality that includes the learning outcomes of children along with co-scholastic activities and use of resources, including community participation.
The Gunotsav exercise will cover 46,251 government, provincialised, and tea garden-managed schools having over 42,51,524 students.
Earlier this year, Sarma had decided to merge the directorate of government elementary schools with secondary schools for the smooth functioning of both.
A trend of students dropping out had been identified in the last two years, which led the CM to direct all Lower Primary (LP) and nearby Middle English (ME) Schools to be merged to minimise the dropout rate from LP to ME.
Assam is going to implement the National Education Policy 2020 by 2022-2023. The education ministry of Assam has already taken several steps for the implementation.
General Council Meeting for Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences
Sarma, who is also the chancellor of Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences, attended its fifth General Council Meeting on December 12 and discussed the academic and administrative initiatives of the university, according to an official release.
The General Council has made several significant decisions for boosting the academic environment and making a robust administrative mechanism.
Discussions were also made on the suggestions of prime minister Narendra Modi for the development of a curriculum of medical sciences in vernacular languages. Vice-chancellor Dhrubajyoti Bora will be taking the necessary initiative.
The CM also emphasised on the necessity for a permanent campus of the university in order to streamline its functioning.
The chief minister also asked the university to focus on research that has the potential to be transformed from ‘laboratory to field’ for the benefit of the common people.
