Khwaish Sharma
Air Weapon Shooter
The Newtown School, Kolkata
In school, one is supposed to pick up an extracurricular activity. It's pretty much the same drill for all children. When Khwaish found herself faced with making the same choice, she was more inclined towards picking basketball. Little did she know that instead of shooting hoops, she would one day end up shooting targets. Khwaish Sharma is an air weapon shooter. She started training in 2015, but it wasn’t until 2018 that she started training for Peep Sight shooting, which is her chosen discipline to compete in. She has won around 27 gold, 8 silver and 10 bronze medals in various national and state-level tournaments, such as the 2nd WBRA Presidents Cup Air Weapon Shooting Championship, 53rd West Bengal State Shooting Championship 2020, XXIII All India Kumar Surendra Singh Inter School Shooting Championship, and 65th West Bengal State School Games 2019 among other. Khwaish was introduced to the sport by her parents and they are both very proud and supportive of her achievements. She also finds a lot of support and encouragement from her school, and she also shoots competitively as part of her school team. During the lockdown, even though she wasn’t able to practice outdoor, not wanting to lose her edge, Khwaish continued to practice at home with an electronic target. Khwaish often finds herself amid queries and concerns thrown at her involving the sport she plays. Is it safe? Why do you do it? Do You like it? Then there is that outmoded, yet prevalent concern about her being a girl who shoots guns. But Khwaish is unfazed, her sport has not only emboldened her but also made her a strong confident young adult. Her sport also helps her to pursue her career goal of becoming an IAS officer and serving society one day.
