St Xavier’s College, Kolkata, inaugurated a school of social sciences and humanities on its campus on Tuesday.

The new platform is not merely a “physical entity” but aims to create and foster a multidisciplinary academic ecosystem involving the departments of English, sociology, political science, mass communication and videography, film studies, history, and Bengali.

The principal of St Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata, Father Dominic Savio, told The Telegraph that the school would encourage joint research between departments.

For example, the departments of English and Sociology can have a joint paper, he said.

“This harmonious blend of academic strengths not only fosters multidisciplinary research but also opens avenues for insightful discussions, innovative ideas, and a deeper understanding of the intricate web that connects society, culture, and human experience,” Father Savio said in his speech.

He is the director of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities.

“In an era where the challenges facing humanity are increasingly complex and interconnected, multidisciplinary research becomes paramount... The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recognises this, emphasising the need for education that bridges disciplinary divides,” Father Savio said.

During his speech, the principal announced the possibility of academic internships.

“The school will also offer academic internships. This fusion of theoretical understanding and practical application equips our students with a well-rounded education,” he said.

He later told The Telegraph that the college was tying up with organisations to give students training and exposure to industry.

“The NEP talks about experiential learning so that whether it is working in the field with an NGO or in an industry, we intend to give our students that experience from the undergraduate level,” he said.
