Some Calcutta University teachers held an agitation on the College Street campus on Friday alleging that around 52 per cent of teaching posts are vacant as the governor is yet to name nominees to the selection committee that screens candidates for the posts.

The Bengal governor is the ex-officio chancellor of state-aided universities.

The protesters said the teaching strength was inadequate and they were struggling to complete syllabuses. They said of 835-odd posts, CU has teachers in only 396.

They also raised concerns about alleged cheating during postgraduate exams and sought a change in the system.

They later met the officiating vice-chancellor.

Sanatan Chattopadhyay, secretary of the Calcutta University Teachers’ Association, said: “The postgraduate courses are about specialised teaching offered by expert teachers. The teaching-learning process is suffering because of the shortage of teachers.”

VC Santa Datta said: “We are pursuing the issue and hope that the chancellor’s nominee will be sent soon.”

An education department official said the process to recruit teachers could not start in several universities, including CU, because the chancellor was yet to name his nominees.

The chancellor’s office said in an emailed response: “Your mail is received and is being examined.”
