Summary
The centre at World University of Design (WUD) will work on fabrication of designed products and parts manufactured in India
The facility aims to enhance designing methods with research, community-based work, and setting sustainability goals

Haryana-based World University of Design (WUD) has established a Centre of Excellence in Rapid Prototyping to keep up with the growth in domestic manufacturing and encourage the practice of ‘Design in India’ in line with the Centre’s Make in India drive.

The Centre will work on the fabrication of designed products and parts through computer-aided design softwares (CAD), using additive layer manufacturing techniques.

Considering the disruption caused by technology (4th Industrial Revolution) and augmented by the pandemic, WUD claims that any move forward to stimulate overall economic activity and creation of new jobs will have to involve design and futuristic manufacturing methods.

By setting up this centre of excellence, WUD has equipped its students with rapid prototyping tools such as 3D parametric software, 3D scanners, 3D printers, laser cutters and computerised numerical control machines.

Under the European Union’s Erasmus Plus funded DESINNO project, the centre aims to provide a common ground for the following activities:

·  Development of innovative and permanent methods for research and design development

·  Establishment of cross-sectoral projects for collaboration and co-learning

·  Establishment of inter-industry projects to facilitate the inclusion of design

·  Development of sustainability aspects of design

·  Development of community-based programmes enabling designers, craftsmen and artisans

·  Modernisation and internationalisation of the university by following state of the art methodologies in design thinking, sustainability, design research, social innovation and ethical issues in design, among others

The challenge for design education is to move to a more holistic, multi-disciplinary and hands-on approach to create professionals, WUD said in a statement recently.
